The world’s newest snake has menacing-looking yellow and black scales, dull green eyes and two spiky horns. And it’s named after a 7-year-old girl.
Matilda’s Horned Viper was discovered in a small patch of southwest Tanzania about two years ago and was introduced last month as the world’s newest known snake species in an issue of Zootaxa.
Tim Davenport, the director of the Wildlife Conservation Society in Tanzania, was on the three-person team that discovered the viper. Thanks to his daughter, the snake will always carry a family namesake.

“My daughter, who was 5 at the time, became fascinated by it and used to love spending time watching it and helping us look after it,” Davenport told The Associated Press on Wednesday. “We called it Matilda’s Viper at that stage … and then the name stuck.” Only three new vipers have been discovered across Africa the last three decades, making the find rare and important. The Wildlife Conservation Society is not revealing exactly where the snake lives so that trophy hunters can’t hunt it.
Davenport said he is not sure how many live in the wild because snake counts are hard to do. Twelve live in captivity and a breeding plan is being carried out.
Davenport, a Briton who has lived in Tanzania for 12 years, said that while many people fear snakes, most are harmless and help keep rodent numbers down. Matilda’s horned viper can grow to 2 feet (65 centimetres) or bigger, he said.
“This particular animal looks fierce and probably is venomous (though bush viper bites are not fatal),” Davenport told AP via an Internet chat. “However, it is actually very calm animal and not at all aggressive. I have handled one on a number of occasions.”
The Wildlife Conservation Society runs the Bronx Zoo and the Central Park Zoo in New York, and Davenport said it would be a “great option” to showcase the new horned viper at one of those locations, but that nothing has yet been decided.

It is advisable that candidates retain a printed copy of their results.

ability to of the website to withstand the huge traffic – the website had crashed last year – IIMs and other institutions have also started free helpline numbers.

For the successful candidates, the IIMs have done away with group discussion and replaced it with a written essay test; followed by personal interview round.
Importantly, the CAT scores are being given lesser importance as the focus has shifted to non-engineers and work experience. Gender correction is also round the corner, reports said.

Chinese Attack On June/July 2012: China To Attack India In June/July 2012

It is time the ministry of defence got cracking in building up the Indian Army’s military capability to face the Chinese threat, warns Colonel Anil Athale (retd).
Last year when this author wrote about a Kargil- style foray by China in the near future, the idea was more in the realm of speculation. But the events of the last few months seem to move the likelihood from the speculative to the possible.
But it seems that New Delhi is in deep slumber or has no time to pay attention to such ‘minor’ issues like national security when all attention is focused on the upcoming assembly election in Uttar Pradesh.
It is, however, unfair to blame the government alo#8800 even the Opposition is equally busy in its perennial game of one ‘UP-manship’ and has never effectively taken up the issue of defence preparedness in Parliament.
The media is frivolous as ever and is chasing TRPs; unfortunately there are no TRPs to be gained on defence issues.
This is an attempt by a student of history to give a wake-up call.

What makes matters even worse than ‘normal’ in Delhi today is the inefficiency that has crept in all decision-making due to the ‘Diarchy’ that prevails in Delhi.
For those unfamiliar with the term — this was the system in British India when the rulers of the princely states had all the trappings of power but the British resident exercised the real power.
In its second avatar, the United Progressive Alliance resembles that model with real power in the hands of the Gandhi dynasty while the prime minister has all the trappings of power.
What this has done is the pivotal position of the Prime Minister’s Office and its job of co-ordination and enforcement of the will of the government on the State machinery is severely compromised.
In case of vital decisions on security issues, this can lead to disasters.
The portents indeed are ominous. On December 14, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told Parliament that his government does not share the view that China plans to attack India.
Exactly half a century ago, another Indian prime minister stuck to a similar view, until November 21, 1962.
Broadcasting to the nation that day, that prime minister lamented that in this hour of peril, our heart goes to the people of Assam!
As Jawaharlal Nehru spoke to the nation, the civil administration in Tezpur had begun to burn documents and currency in the government treasury, prison doors were thrown open, and everyone made a beeline to get across the Brahmaputra by whatever means.
The stage was being set for surrendering all territory north of the Brahmaputra to the Chinese.
To the people of my generation, the memories of that day give goose pimples even today. The unfortunate similarities do not end there.
Just a year before that, in 1961, the then defence minister V K Krishna Menon had a scrap in public with the highly esteemed army chief, who resigned and then took back his resignation on the prime minister’s advice.
The prime minister then went on to humiliate the general in Parliament. As a consequence, the morale of the army was badly affected.
As someone who has studied that conflict, including the famed Henderson Brooks Report, one can say without any contradiction that ‘loss of morale’ was the single biggest cause of our debacle in 1962.
It is incredible that exactly after half a century we have a similar confrontation between the army chief and the defence ministry bureaucracy.
One of the horror stories of the 1962 conflict with China was the way India made a frenzied effort to arm the soldiers with modern weapons. The insistence on ‘indigenous’ production of arms and inability of the local R&D/factories starved Indian soldiers of tools of war.
So, what do we do?
Brand new rifles (the 7.62 SLR) were airdropped at Dirang Zong, of course without ammunition! As if the soldiers are robots who can instantly master new weapons and begin using it!
Our army’s modernisation is stuck in red tape of the deepest hue.
Import of the critical lightweight howitzer, so important to provide artillery support to infantry in the mountains, is stuck in the courts/CBI clearances and what not.
Anyone familiar with the armed forces remembers the phrase often used by superiors while giving orders, ‘I do not care whether you beg, borrow or steal! I want this done!’
It is time to remind the defence minister that the country expects him to deliver security and efficiency.
His primary job is to ensure honour and safety of the country, and not his honour, that must come last, always and every time (a sort of modified version of the Chetwood pledge that all newly commissioned officers take).
It appears that China is carefully choreographing incidents with India. First, there were several instances of Chinese troops crossing the border, marking their presence. We have dismissed these as ‘minor’ incidents.
Then there was the verbal spat and exchange of notes over the Indian foray into oil exploration in Vietnam waters. The new year saw ill-treatment of an Indian diplomat. Earlier, there were cases of Indian diamond merchants being imprisoned in China. All these could well be dismissed as minor incidents that involve local officials.
If similar incidents were to take place on the India-Pakistan border, they are not to be taken seriously because in Pakistan nobody is in control of the armed forces or civilian officials.
But China is NOT Pakistan — the People’s Liberation Army, the media (including the Internet) are all under tight party/government control in China.
India would be making a grave error of judgment if it considers these incidents as non serious. There seems to be a design behind these orchestrated events, especially the forays by the PLA.
It is time India woke up. Luckily, we do have some time.
At the moment the Himalayan passes are frozen and no military operations are possible.
The likely threat will only emerge in June/July 2012. It must be made clear that one is not talking of an all-out war.
What we must accept is a short, sharp, attack by the Chinese, more in the nature of a slap!
To those who claim that Indo-Chinese trade is too big — one needs to remind them that as a proportion of overall Chinese trade with the world, it is of very little consequence!
It is time the ministry of defence cleaned up its act got cracking in building up the Indian Army’s military capability to face the Chinese threat.

Union Bank Of India (UBI) Jobs: Union Bank Of India (UBI) 4500 Jobs Recruitments 2012

Banks have started filling up vacancies, and there are some 4,500 probationary officer posts right now for the taking.
For the first time, the score secured by candidates in the common written examination for officers’ jobs in 19 public sector banks, conducted by Institute of Banking Personnel Selection last year, will be used by banks.
As of now, Union Bank of India, Syndicate Bank and Corporation Bank have invited applications from candidates who successfully passed the common written examination.
More banks are likely to notify vacancies before end-March. That’s happening as a number of senior bankers are set to retire following superannuation. “On an average, about 50 per cent of officers above AGM level are set to retire in 3-5 years in the banking sector, which calls for recruitment in a phased manner,” a top functionary of Indian Banks’ Association told Business Line.
The candidates would be short-listed on the basis of their scores and will be called directly for an interview/personality test. Different banks have specified different cut-off marks as minimum qualification criteria.
Syndicate Bank, for instance, has specified that general candidates with a degree must get a total weighted score of 138 out of 250 marks. Corporation Bank has specified that general candidates must secure at least 151/250
CONCERNS
While the system of a common written exam has been welcomed by candidates, there are some concerns as well.
“Earlier, one had to pay a fee only once. Now, banks are again asking us to pay Rs 200 as fee. As we are paying a fee to take the common written exam, why should we pay fee again? Everybody may not be able to do this,” Ms Swathi Rupa, an engineering graduate and an officer aspirant, told Business Line.
“The eligibility criteria for IBPS written exam and jobs in banks are different. This is causing trouble to many candidates,” Mr C. S. Vepa, Director, National School of Banking, a coaching institute for banks exams, said.
While any graduate is eligible to take the common exam, banks are asking for a minimum of 55 per cent marks in graduation.
“When banks tie up with IBPS for a common written test, the eligibility criteria should also be identical,” Mr M. N. Bharadwaj, an aspirant in Hyderabad said.

Cracks In Airbus A380 Wings: Engineers Finds Cracks In Wings Of Airbus A380s

Australian aircraft engineers have called for Airbus A380 – the world’s biggest passenger aircraft – to be grounded, after Singapore Airlines and Qantas found cracks in the wings of their super-jumbos.
‘We can’t continue to gamble with people’s lives and allow those aircraft to fly around and hope that they make it until their four-yearly inspection,’ said Steve Purvinas, secretary of the Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association.
Both airlines, and Airbus, admitted that they had discovered cracks, but maintained that the aircraft were safe. In total, 67 Airbus A380s are in use worldwide, on seven airlines.The aircraft are in use by Qantas, Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Air France, Lufthansa, Korean Airlines and China Southern.
‘We confirm that cracks were found on non-critical wing attachments on a limited number of A380s,’ an Airbus spokesperson said today.
‘We’ve traced the origin of these hairline cracks, and developed an inspection and repair procedure which can be done during routine maintenance.’
Singapore Airlines, the world’s second-biggest carrier, operates 14 A380s already and has five on order, while Qantas has taken delivery of 10 of its order of 20 A380 aircraft.
The A380 has been in service for five years. It seats 525 passengers in a typical three-class arrangement. In total, 238 of the aircraft have been ordered by 17 airlines worldwide.
Singapore Airlines (SIA) and Qantas Airways said on Friday they discovered cracks on the wing ribs of their Airbus A380s, but said the cracks pose no threat to safety and repairs have been carried out.
The remarks came after Airbus said on Thursday that engineers discovered minor cracks in the wings of a ‘limited number’ of A380s, but said the cracks were not affecting the safety of the aircraft.
‘Cracks were found on a small number of wing rib feet on an Airbus A380 during inspections in the second half of last year. These pose no safety issue and repairs were carried out on the aircraft,’ SIA’s spokesman Nicholas Ionides said in an email.
‘Repairs were subsequently carried out on a second aircraft. We have kept the relevant regulatory authorities fully informed and will be carrying out inspections and any necessary repairs on other A380s as they go in for routine checks,’ he added.
Qantas separately said that ‘minuscule cracking’ was found in the wing ribs of the Qantas A380 being repaired in Singapore after one of its Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engines suffered a mid-air blowout in 2010.
‘Investigations have found that the cracking is unrelated to the engine failure incident experienced by this aircraft in November 2010 and is not unique to Qantas. It has now been repaired,’ the carrier said in a statement.
‘No immediate action is required by A380 operators because the cracking presents no risk whatsoever to flight safety,’ Qantas said.
A Lufthansa spokesman said: ‘There is no findings on our side and we have normal operations.’
Airbus said it has traced the origin of the problem and developed an inspection and repair procedure that will be done during routine, scheduled four-year maintenance checks.
SIA, the world’s second-biggest carrier by market value and the first operator of such aircraft, operates 14 A380s and has five on order, while Qantas has taken delivery of 10 of its 20 A380 aircraft on order, according to the airline’s website.
Both Singapore Airlines and Qantas are using Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engines on their A380 fleets.

Lana Sator found her way into one of NPO Energomash’s huge factories outside the Russian capital Moscow, without coming across a single security guard – or indeed any other employees at all.
But she could now be in some serious trouble with the Russian government.
The young blogger and her friends were able to simply jump over the fence surrounding the complex, climb the ladders surrounding the outside, and find their way right into its heart through a series of gangways, tunnels and pipes.
But this apparently decrepit factory is far from abandoned. NPO Energomash builds rockets that power the modern Soyuz, the Zenit 3SL, and the Angara and Baikal launch vehicles.
Their RD-180 engine powers the first stage of the Atlas V, an American rocket, and they have strong ties to the Russian military – which has one of the biggest arsenals of nuclear armed ballistic missiles in the world
The Russian government has already responded to Ms Sator’s adventures in the strategically important site. Officials have sent her letters warning that her situation will get ‘much worse’ if she keeps posting photos from the factory online.
For her part, Ms Sator has been undeterred and simply posted the letters on her own blog – lana-sator.livejournal.com – for the world to see.

Sydney Spies, 18, organised the protest after administrators at Durango High School told her the senior portrait she submitted would not be printed.
She claims she was told it was rejected because her attire in the photo violated the school’s dress code.
The high school in Durango, Colorado requires student to wear tops that ‘fully cover the chest, back, abdomen and sides of the student.’
But the photo Sydney handed in shows her wearing a short yellow shirt with nothing but a black shawl wrapped around her chest exposing her shoulders and midsection.
‘It’s a little different from everyone else’s picture,’ she told the Durango Herald.
But she said she chose it because it was a picture which best represented her personality.
‘I feel like they aren’t allowing me to have my freedom of expression,” she said, according to the Herald.
Sydeny and her mother Miki held a protest outside the school on Wednesday with friends to make their paint by waving handwritten signs.
DHS Principal Diane Lashinsky and assistant principal LeAnne Garcia declined requests for comment from the Herald about the issue.
Sydney said she has arranged a meeting with the principal on Friday morning to discuss the issue.

No Pants Subway Ride 2012 is soon approaching! This weekend riders will hop a train in NYC without pants all for a little silliness. All in good fun, the No Pants Subway Ride has grown over the years and is now its 11th official ride.
Started by Improv Everywhere, the goal is for riders to get on the subway train dressed in normal winter clothes (without pants) and keep a straight face. Without giggling or whispering to friends, the point is to act as if everything is okie-dokie.

A well-organized event the No Pants Subway Ride 2012 has six locations to choose from as a starting point. There are specific direction on Improv Everywhere’s website as to the who what when and where.
The No Pants Subway Ride 2012 starts promptly at 3:00 p.m., and if you have no sense of humor, avoid the subway in NYC at this time. The show goes on even if the temperature is freezing. Bob Weston Died: Fleetwood Mac Guitarist Bob Weston Found Dead in London

Former Fleetwood Mac guitarist Bob Weston has died at the age of 64 in London.
Weston’s official website said on Friday he was found dead at his home in north London by police on Tuesday after friends became concerned that they had not heard from him for several days.
“Cause of death has been attributed to a gastrointestinal hemorrhage,” said a message posted by the website’s webmaster and Weston friend Steve Fairhead.
London police confirmed Weston’s death, and said they were not treating it as suspicious.
Weston joined Fleetwood Mac in 1972 as a replacement for Danny Kirwan, and played on the albums “Penguin” in 1973 and “Mystery to Me” later the same year.
But according to online biographies, during an American tour Mick Fleetwood discovered Weston was having an affair with his wife, Jenny Boyd, and Weston was sacked in 1974.
He went on to release several solo albums and played with musicians including Long John Baldry and Murray Head.
“My family and I have lost a dear friend; the world has lost an enormously talented musician, with unfinished business,” Fairhead wrote on the website.

Air Balloon Crash: 11 Killed In Hot Air Balloon Crash In New Zealand

All 11 people on board a hot air balloon which crashed in a ball of flames in New Zealand early Saturday morning were killed, police and medical officials said.
Police confirmed there were “multiple deaths”, and a local district health board spokeswoman Jill Stringer said none of the 11 people on board the balloon survived. The hot air balloon went down near Carterton, a small town just north of the capital Wellington and a popular area for hot air ballooning.
Police said there was no immediate indication of what caused the early morning tragedy which occurred in fine weather with minimal wind. However, one witness, David McKinlay, told reporters he looked up to see one side of the basket on fire and “all of a sudden there was just 10 metres of flames”.
“It was like a rocket coming down; it was just unbelievable,” he said. McKinlay, who alerted the emergency services, said the balloon was about 150 metres in the air when it plummeted to
the ground.
Another witness told Fairfax News he was looking out of his window when he saw the balloon appear to hit a power cable.
“The people were enjoying a nice ride and by the looks of it they clipped a power wire,” he said.
“Then I heard the screams and looked out the window and heard it coming down. I was having my breakfast and I heard them. They sounded like screams of joy but they weren’t.
“It wasn’t coming from a great deal of height. I ran down the road to see if I could help but by that
stage it was too late. it was just burned out. By the time the emergency services got there, there wasn’t much of a chance.”
Two of the passengers are believed to have leaped from the burning basket and were found in a nearby paddock. Police say they were first alerted to the tragedy at 7:26 am (local time) and websites for ballooning companies in Carterton, about 150 kilometres north of Wellington, recommend early morning flights.
Reporters at the scene said the crash site has been cordoned off and only emergency workers and the families of those on board the balloon are being allowed through.

Former pro-wrestler, governor of Minnesota, Navy frogman, noted conspiracy theorist and former citizen of the United States, Jesse Ventura, got his lights knocked out by a Navy SEAL after he chose to protest the funeral of a fallen SEAL.
Navy SEAL and record holding sharpshooter Chris Kyle got into a confrontation with Ventura at the services of a fallen comrade that were being held at a local bar. Kyle has said that he approached Ventura to leave when he was told that “We [SEALs] deserve to lose a few guys.” That’s when Kyle decided to give Jesse what he has long sought – a confrontation. Ventura, however, unequivocally lost that fight when Kyle knocked him out and proceeded to flee the scene.
O&A, you may know, have no history of love lost with Ventura after he stormed out of an interview with the radio duo after repeated challenges to his conspiracy theories by comedian Jim Norton. If you’re not familiar with the news-making 2009 confrontation, here it is:
Kyle is the SEAL’s “deadliest sniper.” Ventura is a noted proponent of the theory that the 9/11 attacks were orchestrated by the government (often called a “Truther”). There are probably not too many SEALs mourning the attack on Ventura after years of his purporting conspiracy theories.
